The Upstate's top hot dogs

There’s something magical about hot dogs. Beef, pork, chicken, turkey, or even tofu, there’s a dog for everybody. Maybe it’s the nostalgic memories of summertime grills, childhood field trips or baseball games that make hot dogs so appealing. Or maybe it’s just the great taste of meat and bun coming together in harmonious balance. Whatever it is, hot dogs rock. And here’s a list of some of the best around the Upstate.

Hot Dog King

Hot Dog King

209 S. Main St. - Greenville
864-242-0633

The Formica booths, the big glass windows for people-watching, the really good crushed/cube ice, the tea that’s served in pitchers like you have at home, the same old guys running the place that have been there for years, the piles of onion rings taller than Mt. Everest, and of course, the hot dogs. The buns, the chili, the kraut, the actual dogs…everything about them rocks. They also serve burgers, sandwiches, and stuff, but why anyone would order anything but a hot dog here is beyond me.

Skin's

Skin's

3420 Clemson Blvd. Market Place shopping center - Anderson
864-225-9229

Nothing ruins a hot dog faster than a stale, hard bun. But you never have to worry about that at Skins. The soft, delicious, white bread is fantastic. If you’re headed there for dinner, get there on time. They close at 6:50 p.m.

Chef a la Cart

Chef a la Cart

Main Street In front of The Greenville News building - Greenville
864-616-4623

OK, so Broad and Main isn’t exactly 59th and Lex, but it is hopping enough to host a hot dog vendor. And he’s got the good stuff: Sabrett hot dogs. Just like you’d get in the city. And the slaw dog rocks. If you’re not part of the downtown lunch crew, though, check out the guy outside of Lowe’s on Woodruff Road. His are pretty amazing, too.

Just Dogs

Just Dogs

3225 N Pleasantburg Dr - Greenville
864-271-2226

A Bird Dog is chicken breast (fried or grilled), served on a hot dog bun, with this amazing special sauce on top. Sure, you can get other stuff on there, but the guys at Just Dogs make their sauce in-house, and you really can’t beat it.

Corner Pocket Tavern

Corner Pocket Tavern

21 E. Coffee St. - Greenville
864-242-3432

The Smothered Dog: I’m sure there are purists out there expecting to see “chili” or “sauerkraut” here, but no. Think Philly Cheesesteak on a hot dog. The Smothered Dog is a wiener covered in sautéed peppers, onions and melted Swiss cheese.

Ike's Korner Grille

Ike's Korner Grille

104 Archer Road - Spartanburg
864-542-0911

The Turbo Dog: Everything’s better with bacon, right? Well, that’s the philosophy behind the Turbo Dog at Ike’s. They don’t just wrap the wiener in bacon, they deep fry it, too. If you’ve got an EMT on standby, go ahead and get chili and cheese on top.

Todaro Pizza

Todaro Pizza

105 Sloan St - Clemson
864-654-3001

Pig in a Blanket: Not many pizza shops are known for their hot dogs, but these guys are. It’s an all-beef hot dog, wrapped in pizza dough with mozzarella cheese baked in, and it’s served with your choice of marinara or mustard. They’ll even deliver it.
