Shane's Distinctive Southern Cuisine is located on Augusta Street near downtown Greenville. Here's what four readers said about their visit to the upscale Southern restaurant:

This little gem, located behind The Galleries of Brian Brigham, has a surprisingly unique and eclectic decor. The lunch menu listed a nice variety of salads, soups and sandwiches. I ordered the pulled pork sandwich, made with tender pork, crisp lettuce, sliced tomatoes and a tangy mustard sauce. For side items, I had their delicious potato salad and one of the best pasta salads I've ever tasted. If you have a passion for pistachios, I suggest trying the pistachio cheesecake for dessert. It was a great ending to an excellent meal!

Shane's Distinctive Southern Cuisine offers two dining options: An indoor option in which you can peruse antiques, many of which are for sale, while dining; and an outside French Quarter style patio. I heard several patrons "oooo" and "ahhh" as they enjoyed the surroundings, but since I was focusing on the food and not the antiques, I didn't understand what the big deal was. I do understand good food and good service though. My grilled chicken sandwich was excellent. The coleslaw had too much dill for my taste, but the chef is to be congratulated for not settling for bland, and it's true many people do enjoy his recipe. One waitress took care of the whole restaurant, but she made sure everyone was well taken care of. The menu is limited, but everyone should find something.

Shane's was a very different dining experience than I have had in a very long time. The atmosphere was very warm and inviting. The decorations were very eclectic with all of the tables being different and having different types of chairs at each one. The hostess let me know all of the specials and by the description alone I decided to try the chicken club with pasta salad and the blue crab and mushroom soup. When my meal came to the table the bacon that topped my sandwich was still sizzling. Aside from everything being fresh the flavors were complementary to each other. I ended my meal with the honey bun bread pudding. The name alone made my teeth hurt but I pushed forward and was very glad I did because this and the meal as a whole was a very tasty treat.

Whether it's the eclectic decor, the homespun menu or the conversational style of service, you'll find it all to be a fitting complement to chef-owner Shane Smith's remarkable and distinctive Southern cuisine. I arrived for lunch and ordered the portabello mushroom burger. It was served with grilled asparagus tips on top and nestled under melted Swiss cheese. I must admit that it was the best burger I have ever tasted, and I can't wait to return and try one of Shane's featured dinner entrees. This quirky hideaway is located off the beaten path and is one of Greenville's best-kept secrets.
