Greenville is a city that likes its coffee independent. Yeah, there's a handful of Starbucks around, but you're more likely to find a locally based coffee house than you are a certain beanery from Seattle. And there's plenty of hot brewed drinks beyond coffee in our fair city. By popular demand of Metromix readers a certain tea shop is also included in our Best of 2011. If you think we left out a deserving nominee, let us hear about it!

By popular demand, we're including this tea house in the coffee shop category. They offer coffee, but the specialty is tea. Hot tea. Bubble tea. Chai tea. You name it, they've got it.

The people at Coffee & Crema take their coffee seriously. So seriously that you may find yourself spending an hour or more debating brewing methods with the staff if you've got the time. But if you don't know your Americano from your Caf au Lait, don't fret. Although Coffee & Crema's staff is knowledgeable and passionate, they aren't intimidating. And if you're up for a show, check out one of the coffee shop's regular latte art competitions, where baristas and coffee connoisseurs create unique designs in the milky foam at the top of a latte.

Downtown Greenville's first destination coffee shop. Coffee Underground has been serving specialty coffees for decades. They also have a stage for featuring indie films, stand up comedy and live music in a classic coffee shop atmosphere.

Liquid Highway

Neighborhood: Downtown

This Main Street coffee house is part of a locally owned chain of coffee shops in the Upstate. They feature lattes, mochas and other specialty coffee drinks. Liquid Highway also has a unique business model. Profits from the company are used for the company's Touch the Ground Foundation, a Christian charity. Metromix readers voted Liquid Highway Best Coffee Shop 2010.

Spill the Beans must be doing something right because they go toe to toe with the big dogs every day at their South Main Street location, across the street from Starbucks. In addition to a regular rotation of brewed coffee, they offer specialty coffee drinks, ice cream and milkshakes.
