Dr. Dog, 'Be the Void'
The '60s-inspired pop rockers from Pennsylvania are back with their seventh studio album, a follow-up to 2010's generally well-received "Shame, Shame," and seem to be hemorrhaging influences as usual. Check out the Vampire Weekend vocals on "Heavy Light" and "Get Away," or the Beach Boy harmonies on "Big Girl." As always, the boys know how to work in a good turn of phrase and a bumping groove—look no farther than album opener "Lonesome," with its slow, stomping gait and playful call-and-response lyrics. This is Dr. Dog's second release on the ANTI- label—a label whose artists span a huge spectrum of genres, from rap to folk to rock to reggae—and it seems like the band's song-to-song diversity makes it a perfect fit. –LM
