On a rainy Sunday night in Los Angeles, the stars came out for the 39th annual American Music Awards. Adele, the evening's leading nominee, was at home in England recovering from throat surgery, but other stars including Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez, Taylor Swift, Katy Perry and Will.i.am braved the bad weather to strut their stuff on the red carpet outside the Nokia Theatre.
Inside, performances were heavy on the lasers and sparkly and/or barely there outfits. Nicki Minaj and Kelly Clarkson dazzled early on, Jennifer Lopez inexplicably got to perform twice, and Pitbull joined Marc Anthony onstage just minutes after grinding on his scantily clad ex-wife Lopez, which wasn't awkward at all. The highlight (such as it was): Watching the assembled A-list multitude don 3D glasses to watch David Hasselhoff, Justin Bieber and that Keenan Cahill kid from YouTube dance like idiots with LMFAO during the big finale.
The evening's big winner was Taylor Swift, who took home three awards, including Artist of the Year. Adele also won three awards, including Favorite Pop/Rock Album; Nicki Minaj won both awards in the hip-hop/rap category; and Nashville pop/rock group Hot Chelle Rae was a surprise winner in the Best New Artist category, beating out Wiz Khalifa and the Band Perry.
