Mariah Carey, 'Merry Christmas II You'
Sixteen years after her first Christmas album—which sold over 12 million copies worldwide—the R&B diva is finally releasing a sequel. Though her famously fluttery pipes have weakened in the intervening years, there’s a heartfelt quality to her readings of “The First Noel” and a live version of “O Holy Night” that’s been lacking on her recent studio albums. The set’s only major misfires are a funked-up “Here Comes Santa Claus” and an “Extra Festive” remake of Carey’s own “All I Want for Christmas Is You” that’s virtually indistinguishable from the original. Will it sell 12 million? No, but it should please longtime fans.
