Backstory: Although Local H founder Scott Lucas started his band in 1987, it didn't make the scene fast enough to compete with Nirvana. It is Cobain's shadow that Lucas has unfairly dwelt beneath since.

Why you should care: From early releases like the 1996 effort "As Good As Dead" to more recent missiles like "Whatever Happened to PJ Soles?", Local H has stayed true to its main course: thunderous riff-rock shot through with self-deprecating reminiscences of failed dreams and relationships. Thrown amidst the classic rock of yesteryear and the popped punk of the new millennium, Local H still manages to deliver bleeding ears and hearts with the best in the biz.

Verdict: As far as head-banging anthem rock goes, Local H has produced another compelling entry. Lucas channels McCartney and Cobain on the revisionist burner "Michelle (Again),” and the sardonic "BMW Man" feels like Pavement crashing headlong into Cheap Trick (who drummer Brian St. Clair has been working with for years now). But those are easy comparisons, and Local H manages to transcend them—although few alt-rockers would have written as corny a power ballad as "Simple Pleas."

X-Factor: Local H covered Britney Spears' "Toxic" in 2005, to wry acclaim. They also released a single called "Eddie Vedder" in 1996 with the riotous chorus, "Would you like me better/If I was Eddie Vedder?"
