The Consumers' MySpace page describes the Spartanburg band's sound with an explicit and humorous sentence. To paraphrase: Radiohead having sex with The Doors. More accurately, tracks on The Consumers' 2008 eponymous debut LP recall '90s Brit-rock champs The Verve. Songs like “The Chaser” and seven-minute jam “The Bastard” offer mercury verses, arena choruses and spaced-out interludes. Not bad for a group that played its first show at a sushi restaurant.
Drummer Casey Burgess, 29, says The Consumers' material is changing. “On the new (album) the way we wanted (was) to have good tight songs. Pink Floyd's got some really long tracks, but ‘Dark Side (of the Moon)' is mostly short and to-the-point.”
The Consumers' lineup also includes singer Joe Power, bassist Mark Miller, guitarist Wes Gosnell and keyboardist Louis Meyers. On March 5, the group will put out its sophomore effort, “Profiteering,” with a CD release gig at The Showroom. One tune from the album, “The Brother,” features Power doing a solid Jim Morrison (or possibly Ian Astbury) imitation over a glossy, wah-caked groove. “Some of the new record is a little edgier, louder and faster,” Burgess says. The drummer attributes the newfound vociferation to an AC/DC jones.
The Consumers play a special CD release show at 8 p.m. March 5 at Spartanburg's Showroom. Tickets are $10. For more information, call 864-582-0056 or visit www.myspace.com/theconsumersroc.
