Angelina Jolie, "Lara Croft: Tomb Raider"
Up until “Lara Croft: Tomb Raider,” movie archaeologists were crusty older men—world-weary travelers with an endless supply of leather coats. But with a sizzling hot Jolie in the role, Lara was different. She was sexy, hip, modern, state of the art.
In the film’s first scene, she descends into an Egyptian tomb, winds up battling a robot, and then recovers a laptop memory card. 21st century sleuthing, indeed. Even better: The whole thing was a training exercise—based inside her sprawling home. Yes, Lara Croft is a computer wizard, an elite athlete, a smart historian with MacGyver-like instincts; a hot female nerd with a license to kill—every fanboy’s dream.
