Jamie Foxx in "Stealth"
“The Fast and the Furious” director Rob Cohen is not one for subtlety. And there’s certainly nothing subtle about this military thriller’s HAL-from-“2001: A Space Odyssey”-in-jet-form artificial-intelligence villain, or the evil plane’s murder of Jamie Foxx, easily the most famous and acclaimed of the film’s three heroic leads. (“Stealth” was released just months after Foxx collected his Best Actor Oscar for “Ray.”) Foxx’s early exit may be a ballsy move, but it’s also not a very smart one since it paves the way for less established co-stars Josh Lucas and Jessica Biel to take center stage by themselves. When “Stealth” registered as one of summer 2005’s biggest box-office disappointments it only proved that the early-celebrity-death gambit doesn’t always translate to big bucks.
