John Travolta, "Hairspray"
There’s no denying that John Travolta threw himself into “Hairspray” heart and soul. Strapping on a fat suit, dancing his butt off, and insisting on realistically feminine cosmetics, Travolta’s commitment to the part is truly impressive. But his method approach doesn’t really translate into an entertaining character. Rather than embracing the campiness of the script, his pseudo seriousness—and his questionable falsetto—left his drag performance feeling forced, and impersonal.
