"Star Wars: Episode I—The Phantom Menace"
Mop-topped youngster Anakin Skywalker (Jake Lloyd), a mechanical whiz, human slave on desert planet Tattooine, and future evil overlord, competes in a podrace for his freedom. More or less exactly what it sounds like, a podrace is a speed-based contest between several space jalopies flying slightly higher than the “Back to the Future Part II” hoverboards and at about the same velocity as the “TRON Legacy” lightcycles.
Real-world potential: If flying space pods are ever invented—obviously a big “if”—we wouldn’t rule out a futuristic version of NASCAR competitions. But that says a lot more about “Star Wars” guru George Lucas’ dwindling imagination as a storyteller than it does about his gift for logic.
