"Death Race"
In this more successful popcorn remake of a 1975 B-movie (titled “Death Race 2000”), a prisoner (Jason Statham) wrongfully accused of murdering his wife competes for his freedom in a series of three automotive races against other convicts. To up the stakes, the cars are rigged with all manner of deadly weapons, and the races are broadcast to adoring fans via Pay Per View.
Real-world potential: The popularity of aggressive Pay Per View sporting events makes the idea of the Death Race competition as a TV phenomenon fairly plausible. However, it’s probably better not to read too much into a movie that revels in the kind of bloody, fiery mayhem it pretends to criticize.
