From robot boxing to death races: believable or baloney?

According to Hollywood, sports fans of the future will have long tired of home runs and touchdowns. They’ll be on to a whole new breed of games—some marked by increased risk for the athletes, others defined by advanced technology, and all of them reeking of a sleek, artificial, “only in the movies” kind of futurism.
The new Hugh Jackman vehicle “Real Steel” helpfully offers one such example: robot boxing. Although the concept might sustain a couple hours of rock ‘em, sock ‘em entertainment, it falls apart under scrutiny. After all, isn’t boxing a showcase for human skills and strategies and not just demonstrations of brute strength easily duplicated by machines?
We’ve found 10 past examples of sci-fi movie future sports that are, on average, about as ludicrous as robot boxing. Or maybe they’re not as ludicrous as they seem?
