“In & Out” (1997)
Awkwardness is written all over this Kevin Kline-Joan Cusack comedy. It all begins when a young Hollywood actor (Matt Dillon) wins an Oscar and thanks his inspiration: a former teacher (Kline). It’s a heartwarming moment that quickly turns awkward, as the actor outs the teacher as gay on worldwide television. The catch? Kline is engaged to marry a woman (Cusack). He tries to defend his heterosexuality all the way to the alter, when he turns to his bride-to-be, and rather than saying “I do” utters “I’m gay.” We’ve heard of objections being raised in the wedding hall, but rarely is it the groom himself who shuts down the big show.
