A moorish idol named Gill (black, white and yellow stripes) takes newcomer Nemo (an orange and white striped clown fish) under his fin when the latter lands in his tank. Shading gives the image full color textures and complex surface details. To place the action underwater, particulate matter and surge & swell are added to simulate the ocean. Marlin (bottom), a clownfish, travels to Sydney to find his son after the two are separated. Father is aided in his quest by Dory (top), a blue tang fish with no short-term memory.

Marlin (Albert Brooks), a clown fish, is overly cautious with his son, Nemo (Alexander Gould), who has a foreshortened fin. When Nemo swims too close to the surface to prove himself, he is caught by a diver, and horrified Marlin must set out to find him. A blue reef fish named Dory (Ellen DeGeneres) -- who has a really short memory -- joins Marlin and complicates the encounters with sharks, jellyfish, and a host of ocean dangers. Meanwhile, Nemo plots his escape from a dentist's fish tank.
