So what’s your vote for the all-time classic wind-up toy—the one that you fondly remember playing with over and over as a kid? Is it that hopping toucan? Or maybe the mouse that did back flips?
Whatever your choice, you’ll probably be able to find it on a canvas at Toyland, an exhibit at the Art & Light Gallery scheduled to open Nov. 6 and run through Dec. 19. The exhibit will feature more than a dozen colorful paintings of wind-up toys by local artist Hallie M. Gillett, and it’s sure to be a fun time that sparks childhood reminiscences.
Gillett says in her artist statement that she set out to paint wind-up toys for many reasons. Her collection of wind-up toys was one of her favorites as a child, but she also feels the toys “embody all the color I define my life by.”
The Art & Light Gallery is located in the Pendleton Street Arts District, at 1211 Pendleton St. The show opens on the night of the November First Friday gallery crawl, 6-9 p.m. Nov. 6. Regular gallery hours are 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Thursdays-Saturdays. For more information, visit www.artandlightgallery.com.
