Fishnet is not just for stockings, if you ask designer Reem Acra. The Lebanese designer incorporated the material in her fall collection, which was a sexy nod to Japan, and specifically photographer Daido Moriyama.
"I'm taking you on a trip to Japan and we're going to look at a book by Daido Moriyama and it's about his photography of fish nets on the body," she explained backstage pre-show. "Black and white is the color palette – strength and power – and a touch of red. So, you will see a lot of layering of fishnet over embroidery, under embroidery, as body stockings, so there's the layering with the fishnet, and all of that is inspired by Daido."
The result was a collection of romantic, elegant gowns and dresses fit for the red carpet. Acra's black embroidered ivory sleeveless gown was especially striking and seemed to have Oscar nominee Anne Hathaway's name written all over it. Though when asked about her favorite celeb to dress, Acra was ready with an emphatic endorsement of one star, in particular.
"Oh my God! I love Angelina (Jolie)! I'm obsessed with her – she knows that! I've met her many times and dressed her many, many times. I have Katherine Heigl here (at the show) tonight. I love Halle Berry."
And, naturally, Acra is ready to dress another generation of stars.
"There's a lot of young celebrities that are coming out that are cool and we focus a lot on them because I'm not someone who's very old-fashioned. It's like combining the modern and the luxury."
